Local Digital Marketers with Local Knowledge: A Short History of Finchley

Sitting seven miles north of Charing Cross and 300ft above sea level, Finchley is on a high plateau and is bordered by Whetstone to the north, Temple Fortune and Golders Green to the south, Friern Barnet, Muswell Hill and Highgate to the east and Totteridge, Mill Hill and Hendon to the west.

There’s no evidence of Roman occupation in the area, nor is it mentioned in the Domesday Book. By the late 11th century, the land that makes up the area was included in the land owned by the Bishop of London and the very few medieval residents at that time kept the woodlands to supply wood (for fuel and building) and pigs to London. Over the next few centuries the population slowly increased and farming became more focussed and it was in the early 13th century that the Saxon name of Finchley was first recorded.

Experts are torn but the most likely definition is that it means ‘Finch’s clearing’ but it’s unclear whether it refers to the bird or someone called Finch. The suffix ‘ley’ refers to a woodland opening.

Later in the 13th century, what we know today as the A1000, then called the Great North Road, was re-routed through Finchley and small settlements sprung up around the edges of the woodlands. The parish church of St. Mary was first recorded in 1274 and around it, the settlement known as Church End (now the area around Finchley Central station) developed.

By 1365, East End (of the Bishop’s park and now known as East Finchley) developed and the entrance at the top of the hill became known as Highgate.

Over the next 300 years or so, the woodlands were slowly cleared to form Finchley Common and up until the 19th century, the Great North Road which was used by traders travelling to and from London was notorious for the prevalence of highwaymen.

There was a parish vestry in Finchley from the mid-1500s and a century later the Great North Road passed through the Common to service the major hog market as well as a number of inns and coach houses along the route.

By the 18th century, the main agricultural activity was the production of hay (for which Finchley was very well known and was as important then as petrol is today) and most people living in the area were farmers and agricultural labourers. The Common had been enclosed by then and small dairies emerged to supply the northern half of London with produce.

Into the 19th century and the parish vestry that was established in 1547 became a local board in 1878 and an urban district council in 1895. It was around this time that the population grew exponentially with the introduction of the railway. East Finchley, Church End (renamed Finchley Central), Woodside Park and Totteridge & Whetstone stations opened and over the next 50 years or so, new housing estates fanned out from the radius of the stations and the trains and buses allowed ‘ordinary’ people to travel into London for work.

Between 1933 and 1965 it was a municipal borough but from 1965, it was subsumed into the London Borough of Barnet.

There have been many notable residents in Finchley, including Charles Dickens who wrote Martin Chuzzlewit at Cobley Farm near Bow Lane in North Finchley; Harry Beck, a name unknown to most residents of London but he was the guy who created the tube map we are all so familiar with, lived in Finchley, as did Spike Milligan from 1955 to 1974 and George Michael was born in East Finchley.

The first British (and indeed all Commonwealth) soldier killed in the First World War, Private John Parr lived at 52 Lodge Lane in North Finchley but perhaps the most famous of all Finchley-ites was Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. That she didn’t actually live in the area is largely irrelevant, she was the Tory MP for Finchley from 1959 until 1992.

The area has a rich, vibrant business community and has seen a number of creative businesses emerge in recent years, including designers, copywriters and of course a number of Finchley web designers and website developers in Finchley – of which Scout are now established as one of the leading lights.
