Local Digital Marketers with Local Knowledge: A Short History of Barnet
The recorded history of Barnet dates back to Saxon times. In the earliest deeds, the area was named Bergnet (‘little hill’) but then it was recorded as Barneto in 1070, as plain old Barnet in 1197 and as La Barnette in 1248. The Old English word bærnet means ’the place cleared by burning’ and on August 23, 1199, the area got the prefix ‘Chipping’ which means ‘the market’ when a charter issued by King John granted permission to John de Cella, Abbott of St Albans, to hold a weekly market which is still in operation today, 800+ years later.
At the start of the 11th century, the Manor of Barnet would have come under the ownership of the Abbott and there was a very small settlement at this time around what is now St Mary’s Church in East Barnet. The prevalence of water-bearing pebble gravel in the area made it perfect for settlement because of the easy access to water and the fact that it was on such high ground.
In the 13th century, industry came to the area in the form of a pottery kiln in Arkley, a mill near Pymmes Brook as well as local traders peddling their wares at the market. During the next century, the population was up to around 350 in the mid-1350s but during the Black Death, 80 died. In 1381, men from Barnet took part in the Peasant’s Revolt and 90 years later, the Battle of Barnet took place.
It was said (although independent verification is very hard to come by) that the tower of Barnet parish church was the highest point between itself and the Ural Mountains in western Russia, 2,000 miles to the east. It is 427ft (130m) above sea level and it was recorded by locals that ‘Barnet stands on the highest ground betwixt London and York’ and the hill played a significant role in the battle.
In 1471, the Yorkist armies of King Edward IV overcame the ‘Kingmaker’ Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick and his brother John Neville, 1st Marquess of Montagu in a vitally strategic battle of the Wars of the Roses, which is thought to have taken place around modern-day Hadley Highstone. In the first interesting aside, the hill mentioned in the nursery rhyme ‘The Grand Old Duke of York’ is widely regarded to be Barnet Hill.
Following on the tradition set by King John almost 400 years previously, Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter to the Lord of the Manor of Barnet in 1588 to hold a horse fair twice a year and in the second interesting aside, this is where the rhyming slang ‘Barnet Fair’ for ‘hair’ came into modern parlance.
During the English Civil War in the 17th century, many armies passed through Barnet although no major battles were fought there.
As with many local areas including Elstree, Borehamwood and Finchley, Barnet was on the Great North Road (now designated the A1000) and in the 18th century when coaches travelled to and from the north and east, Barnet was a major stopping point for traders to the tune of around 150 a day. It was recorded in 1756 that Barnet had 190 beds and stabling to accommodate 450 horses and in the last decade of the 1700s, Royal Mail coaches used Barnet as a staging post.
Barnet is home to dozens of pubs and in a third interesting aside, in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, it was in Barnet where Oliver meets the Artful Dodger for the first time after a week of walking.
In the 1801 census, Barnet, barely a hamlet, still had a very small population of 353 but sixty years later there were almost 3,000 and with the introduction of public transport in the mid to late 19th century, the population grew quickly and the area turned from a rural town into an important suburb of London. Trams were introduced in 1907; trolley buses in 1937 and High Barnet tube station came under the auspices of London Underground in 1940.
Today, Barnet is a thriving, bustling town with a great mix of business, manufacturing and retail as well as some excellent schools and colleges. Web design in Barnet is fantastic and the area is home to a vibrant community and Scout consistently supports the local business community.
